My first custom dress- SOLD!

Woooo Hooooo! Thank goodness for friends who come to my shop and my facebook page. I just sold my first custom dress! Yea! It's what I would really LOVE to do full time- well... not FULL TIME!... just full time for me with two small kids still at home.

So... thank you Donna for ordering this dress from me. You make me so happy!

She requested Lynnie Pinnie's adorable little poodle and black and white polka dots with some matching socks. This is what I came up with.

You guys KNOW Lucy and Ella both want this dress!
I used the Simply Sweet Dress and Top pattern by Carla C- this is actually the first one I've made with that pattern. I was really concerned about the fit, with it not having a zipper or ties, but amazingly enough- it works. And will be really great for layering, which is what Donna requested.

She also wanted me to personalize it with her name, which I hate to say... but just makes me cringe. Am I the only one like that??? I know I'm going to have to get over it if I do custom work... but it just kills me! I guess because I come from a huge family and we struggled a little as kids. I LOVED getting hand-me-downs from cousins and friends and every time I put a name on a garment I think about all the kids that won't be able to use this dress as a hand-me-down. Have you noticed I don't personalize anything for my children??? If it's a pillow, or a towel, or a blanket, or even a t-shirt you think will get a lot of wear... but clothes???? That they are going to grow out of quickly and still look brand new. sigh.....

Okay... enough of that.

I hope when Sloane is done with this dress, it goes to good will and some other little Sloane can find it and LOVE it.

And check out these cool socks. These were a first for me, but certainly not the last. They were so fun to make and the girls LOVE them. I used this tutorial for them.

I just love Lucy's shoes... they remind me of my littlest sister Judy who had a pair like that when she was little and wore them everyday. Remember those Mom???

Now... if you're still reading and you make custom clothes... can you tell me how to make a hanging tag? I would love to put one on my first sale!

Congrats!! Not only can you not pass down personalized clothing, but strangers will know the kid's name and that could be dangerous. I used to occasionally personalize stuff for my girls until this was pointed out to me. An initial or monogram would be safer.
This dress and the socks are adorable, though. I hope you have lots of success with this venture.

Love the dress!! Like you, I don't personalize much for my kids, one for safety and two because I want to hold onto everything I make for my kids and hope there kids will be able to wear them.

For the hang tags I use Microsoft Publisher. They are pretty easy to make. I print several out on cardstock and then cut them down to size. Punch a hole in them for ribbon or use a tagger to attach them to the garment. I actually use a basting gun with tacks to attach it to the garments. You can find them at JoAnn.

Yea! for your first sale!

I totally love how you did the poodle applique. I hope you don't mind, but I'm going to copy your applique. It did not appeal to me on the website. I love how you did yours.

Love it, so cute! I am one that is guilty of loving personalized things! I love anything with a name on it. I do see the point about not being able to use it for hand-me-downs.....and my husband is toatally on board about not liking personalized things because of strangers!
